How it works
Three steps, and one of them is optional
No folder watching, no background service, no cloud drive to sync. You point it at files when you want them renamed, and nothing happens when you don't.

Set your naming style
Hyphens, spaces, or underscores. Optionally prefix a date, or add your own instructions like "always start with the client name".

Suggestions appear as a list before anything is written to disk. Rename everything, or pick and choose.

Photos, scans, screenshots, and documents
Images
PNG, JPEG, GIF, and WebP. Photos, screenshots, diagrams, receipts, and scans of handwritten notes.
PDFs
Invoices, contracts, statements, tickets. Only the first pages are read, so a 400-page report costs no more than a two-page one.
Word & text
DOCX and plain text files are named from their contents, not their first line.
Dates, only real ones
A date is added to the filename only when one is actually visible in the file. It never guesses one from the clock.
Folder suggestions
Optionally group renamed files into category folders — invoices, receipts, travel — as it goes.
Batches
Hundreds of files in one go, processed in parallel, with a running progress list you can stop at any time.

Processed, then discarded
To suggest a name, the file has to be read by an AI model, so its contents are sent to our processing service and on to our model provider, Anthropic. We want to be plain about that rather than bury it.
What we do not do:
- We do not keep your files. They are processed in memory and discarded.
- We store only a cryptographic fingerprint of each file, plus its type and size, so repeated requests are not billed twice.
- We do not sell your data, and the site you are reading runs no trackers.

Frequently asked
Does it work offline?
No. Reading the contents of a file to describe it requires an AI model that is far too large to ship inside a desktop app, so NameItRight needs an internet connection.
Can I use my own Anthropic API key instead of subscribing?
Yes. The app supports pointing at your own Anthropic API key, or at an existing Claude Code installation, in which case you pay Anthropic directly and NameItRight costs you nothing. The paid plans are for people who would rather not manage an API key.
What happens if a name comes back wrong?
Nothing is renamed until you approve it, so a bad suggestion costs you a glance. You can re-analyse a file to get a fresh suggestion, or edit the name yourself before applying it.
Will it overwrite a file that already exists?
No. If the target name is taken, a numeric suffix is added rather than replacing anything.
Which versions of Windows are supported?
Windows 10 and Windows 11, 64-bit. macOS and Linux builds are not available today.
Does an unused allowance roll over?
No — it resets at the start of each billing period rather than accumulating. The pricing page explains how PDFs and documents count against it.
